Disabled Facilities / Adaptations

If you have a disability and find it difficult getting in or around your home, or using the facilities within your home, we may be able to give you a grant to help adapt it to suit your needs so that you can continue to live independently.

This grant may help towards the cost of adapting your home so that adults or children with physical disabilities are as independent as possible.

Can I get a disabled facilities grant?

You may apply if you, or someone living in your property, is disabled and:

  • You or the person on whose behalf you are applying, are either the owner or the tenant of the property, (housing association tenants should contact their respective landlord in the first instance as they may be able to help with smaller works)
  • You can certify that you, or the person on whose behalf you are applying, intend to use the property as your/their only or main residence

You can apply as the disabled person, or you can apply on behalf of a disabled person if they are living with you. The person with the disability does not have to be registered as disabled.

If you wish to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant then please contact Care Direct on 0300 123 2224 and then press option 2 when prompted. All applications are subject to an assessment and recommendation from an Occupational Therapist.

Examples of work which may be carried out under a grant:

  • Widening doors and installing ramps
  • Providing or improving access to rooms and facilities - for example, by installing a stairlift or downstairs bathroom
  • Bathroom conversion e.g. providing level access shower, accessible toilet and wash hand basin
  • Improving or providing a heating system which is suitable for your needs
  • Improving access to and movement around the home to enable you to care for another person at the property, such as a child

If you are not eligible for the DFG then you may be able to apply for a low interest loan offered through Wessex Home Improvement loans - please ring 01823 461099 or email enquiries@wrcic.org.uk
