Deposit / Bond Guarantee schemes

SWeLT may be able to offer you help to secure a property with a rent deposit or bond.

What is a rent deposit?

A rent deposit is the deposit required to secure a private tenancy. A council deposit is paid directly to the landlord or letting agent. When the tenancy ends the deposit must be paid back to the council. Should there be a claim the tenant will be liable to repay the council the amount withheld.

What is a bond?

A bond is a written agreement between the council, landlord/letting agent and tenant. Should there be a claim to cover damages when the tenancy ends the council will repay the landlord/agent. The tenant will then be liable to repay the council any money lost.

In some cases the bond deposit will only be valid for 12 months. It is expected that the Tenant uses this time save for a cash deposit.
